4 Warning Signs That It May Be Time to Replace Your Dentures

They say in life, nothing lasts forever. Your tires will wear out, your washing machine will probably break, and in about five to ten years, your dentures will need to be replaced, too. If you’re wondering when it’s time to upgrade to a new set of prosthetic teeth, here are some telltale signs that it may be time to invest in a new pair.

They Don’t Fit Securely

Your dentures should fit snugly to your mouth. If they don ‘t it can cause difficulty keeping them on, irritation, sores, and trouble chewing and speaking. If they no longer fit the way they should, it could be a sign that they need relining, or that it’s time for a new set.

Broken Teeth

The teeth on your dentures should be completely intact. Broken crowns can cause injury to your cheeks and tongue, and they can also make it harder to chew and speak clearly. If any of yours are damaged, it may be possible to replace them, or it could be more beneficial to replace the entire denture.

Dirt, Stains, or Odors

Dentures may not be “real” teeth, but they can still stain and discolor like natural teeth do. If yours are discolored or have stubborn buildup, replacing them may be the best solution. Furthermore, dentures should not smell, so if yours do and you cannot get them clean, it’s best to start over with a fresh pair.

Chipped or Cracked Base

The base that holds your crowns to your dentures is the most important part of the prosthetic. This is the part that comes into immediate contact with your mouth, and if it’s chipped or cracked, can cause a lot of problems. For starters, fractures can allow dangerous bacteria into them, causing them to smell bad and put you at risk for gum disease and other infections. It can also cause injury to your gums if the damaged area rubs or comes in contact with your mouth.

Unfortunately, once a denture base is cracked, there is no way to repair it, and it must be replaced as soon as possible.

Remember, your dentures weren’t meant to last forever. You should plan on replacing them every five to ten years depending on their condition. If they are no longer fitting properly or have any damage, speak to your dentist about your repair or replacement options as soon as possible.
